What you’re actually signing up for

Not a trail ride.
An expedition.

These are real backcountry trips — days in the saddle, nights under canvas, river crossings and alpine passes most outfitters can’t reach.

Your group rides alone with your guide; the route and the pace bend to you, not a fixed schedule. You should be comfortable in the saddle for full days. In return you ride country almost no one else does.

2–4riders per private trip

From one night out
to fourteen days bespoke.

Every trip is private and fully equipped — your guide, the horses, all riding and camp gear, and the access. Prices are per person, in NZD. We run only a handful of departures each season.

Why we can go this deep

Backcountry, run
like it’s serious.

Private group, our weather call

You never ride with strangers. And if the mountain says wait, we wait — you’re never charged for a safety call.

Satellite comms

Carried on every expedition. Days from the nearest road, we’re never out of contact.

Helicopter evac plan

A worked-out evacuation plan for every route — not an afterthought you hope you never need.

First-aid certified guide

Milo is trained and equipped for the backcountry, with the judgement that comes from years in the saddle.

Two to four riders

Small by design. The route, the pace and the camp all flex to your party — never the other way around.

01

Over the Mountain Pass

~15 km · 4–6 hrs

Fowlers Hut up over Fowlers Pass (1,296 m) to the historic Stanley Vale Hut. Dramatic ridgelines, alpine air and your first creek crossings.

02

Down the Stanley Valley

~12 km · 3–5 hrs

Open valley floors, river terraces and gentle undulating country down to a wilderness camp at Pool Hut.

03

To the Hot Springs

~12 km · 3–3.5 hrs

Multiple creek and river crossings lead to the Cow Stream natural hot pools. Soak away the trail under an open sky. (On the Freedom Edition, this is your full free-riding day.)

04

Ride Out

~11 km · 3–3.5 hrs

A relaxed final leg from Cow Stream out to the St James Homestead. Easy terrain, big memories, early-afternoon arrival.

Still unsure? Just enquire — Milo will talk it through.

Comfortable at walk, trot and canter over uneven ground, for full days in the saddle. We’ll always talk through your riding honestly before you book — these are real expeditions, and the fit matters.

High-country trips are weather-bound. Safety decides the route — we adapt or reschedule, and our call to hold is never charged.

Private only, typically two to four riders. You never ride with strangers, and the trip flexes to your party.

Yes — for safety and for the horses’ welfare, every expedition has a minimum rider age of 10 and a maximum rider weight of 110 kg. If you’re near the weight limit, tell us and we’ll talk through the options.

We supply the horses, tack and all camp gear, plus meals on the trail. You bring riding clothes, personal kit and a sleeping bag (or rent one). A full list comes with your enquiry.

Set departures run through WeTravel; bespoke trips by arrangement. A deposit holds your dates, with clear terms shared upfront.

Most of our expedition riders fly in. We’re 90 minutes from Christchurch — tell us your dates and we’ll build the trip around your visit.
