The Bespoke trail
bespoke Trek – Lead Your Own Adventure
The St James Conservation Area is the ultimate playground — 78,000 hectares of wide open spaces, mountains, rivers, creeks, and unridden trails. It’s a land of endless possibilities where everyone can find their own kind of adventure.
It can be a calm, grounding journey through wild valleys, a family adventure, a romantic escape, or a once-in-a-lifetime expedition that tests your limits. We have countless routes and itineraries in mind — far too many to list — so instead, we’ve built this experience around you.
Tell us how much time you have, your pace, and how you’d like to spend your days, and we’ll design a few options to choose from.
Want to soak in natural hot springs? Easy.
Cover vast ground each day, as the early settlers once did? We’re with you.
Visit historic huts, spot red deer, chamois, or falcons, or even bathe your horse in a mountain lake (freezing, but worth it!) — consider it done.
Our guides live and breathe the outdoors — and horses. They’ll happily push the boundaries to take you to places most people will never see in their lifetime.
Here in the St James, the wilderness writes the story — you just choose how it’s told.

Accommodation & Comfort – Sleeping Under the Southern Sky
This is freedom camping at its finest — a true immersion into the wilderness of the St James. You’ll sleep beneath the southern sky, lulled by the sound of the mountains — horses grazing nearby, the creek whispering past your camp, birds calling at dawn, and maybe even a deer nosing close in the misty morning light.
There are no lodges, no hotels, and no facilities out here. No electricity. No hot showers. Just raw, untouched nature — and you, living in rhythm with it. You’ll stay in canvas tipi tents, designed and tested for New Zealand’s wildest conditions. Each tent is equipped with a wood burner stove, keeping you warm and dry even in rain or snow, so this experience can be enjoyed all year round.
We use our years of experience and best camping gear and equipment to make sure you don't have to compromise on comfort. Your meals are planned and prepared by our team, your gear is packed and transported by pack horses, and all you need to bring is your sleeping bag.
We travel where 4WDs can’t — the old way, with minimal footprint and maximum connection. It’s a raw, rare kind of comfort — one that lets you fully immerse yourself in the wild. There are few places left on Earth this untouched — and even fewer this accessible.
