Horse Trekking on the South Island
A bucket-list South Island ride — fly in, saddle up, disappear into the mountains.
For a lot of people, riding a horse through the New Zealand high country is the whole reason they come to the South Island. We are built for exactly that — guided rides and self-supported expeditions in the St James Conservation Area, a short drive north of Christchurch on the road toward Kaikōura and Nelson.
It slots into a South Island itinerary without a fight. Christchurch is 90 minutes away, Kaikōura a similar distance, and Hanmer Springs is right next door for a soak after the saddle. Come for a morning, or come for four days deep in the mountains with packhorses carrying the camp.
Overseas riders are some of our favourite guests — freedom chasers, drifters and curious souls who have flown across the world to do this. No experience required for the day rides; confident riders are spoiled for choice on the longer trails.
Getting here
Central South Island, NZ
Every ride leaves from the St James Homestead, about 20 minutes north of Hanmer Springs in the St James Conservation Area. We send full directions and a meeting time the moment you book — no four-wheel-drive needed, the road in is sealed most of the way.
Two ways
to ride
Whether you have a spare morning or a spare week, there is a ride from South Island that fits.
